Designing accelerated numeracy for out-of-school children

The question
How can a ten-month programme build the foundations children need to return to formal education across distinct languages, regions, and post-conflict realities?
A numeracy curriculum that compressed essential Grades 1 to 3 competencies into a coherent progression for learners with varied and interrupted schooling histories.
Context
A conventional three-year curriculum could not simply be delivered faster. Content had to be prioritised, resequenced, contextualised, and supported by frequent assessment in multilingual classrooms with limited resources.
Our contribution
- 01Mapped national mathematics standards and the prerequisite relationships among competencies.
- 02Developed a ten-month scope and sequence with planned revision and remediation.
- 03Designed feasible lesson structures, activities, games, and locally meaningful problem contexts.
- 04Embedded formative assessment and worked with local facilitators to adapt language, pacing, and routines.
